MOXI BUSTION

What is Moxibustion and how does it work?

To enhance healing with acupuncture, moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medical method that includes the burning of mugwort, a tiny, spongy plant, in order to stimulate the flow of blood. Its goal, as with those of most other types of traditional Chinese medicine, is to increase the circulation of blood, promote the flow of qi, and preserve overall health.

Moxibustion is used to treat individuals who are suffering from a cold or a sluggish state. In addition, the practice heats the meridians, allowing for a more efficient flow of blood and Qi to be achieved through the body. The use of moxibustion to shift breech infants into a normal head-down position before delivery has long been used in Western medicine.

What Is the Mechanism of Action of Moxibustion in Acupuncture?

Moxibustion may be divided into two categories: direct and indirect. An acupuncture point is heated by burning a tiny quantity of moxa, which has been formed into a cone and put directly on top of it. Direct moxibustion may be classified as either scarring or non-scarring when broken down further.

Scarring moxibustion is a technique in which the moxa is burned on the acupuncture point until it is fully consumed. In non-scarring moxibustion, the moxa is put on the spot and ignited, but it is extinguished or removed before it burns the skin and causes it to blister. Unless the moxa is kept in place for an excessive amount of time, patients will sense a pleasant warm feeling that penetrates deep into the skin.

The indirect method of moxibustion is the most common since it has a lesser chance of causing pain or burning than the direct method. Acupuncture practitioners use indirect moxibustion to treat patients by lighting one end of a moxa stick and holding it near to the treatment region for a few minutes until the skin becomes red. Another kind of indirect moxibustion makes use of both acupuncture needles and moxa in the same treatment. A needle is placed into an acupoint and held there for a period of time. Once the needle’s tip has been wrapped in moxa and burned, heat is generated in the spot and surrounding region, resulting in increased blood flow. Once the individual has experienced alleviation, the moxa is extinguished and the needle is removed from his or her body.
